President Barack Obama is set to go down in history as the first United States President to cut the U.S. Commitment to fighting AIDS.
President Obama’s funding cuts to the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief immediately resulted in closures to well-established HIV/AIDS medical clinics in South Africa – the country hardest hit by HIV & AIDS – leaving thousands of South African’s without treatment or medication. The proposed 2013 U.S. Budget cuts $220 million in funding to fight global AIDS, equating a loss of care for 640,000 people living with the disease for one year! The Obama administration has projected a 79% cut in global AIDS funding for hard-hit Ethiopia as well.
Domestically, proposed cuts to the Ryan White Care ACT will leave 8000 people across the United States without medication which could result in reduced health and even death.
